1943 WWII VW82e KdF-Wagen Special cross country staff car/Kommandeurwagen
Model: VW82e KdF type 60 on KubelWagen off road chassis. (Porsche Type 92 )
Body Style: KdF 60 steel enclosed body 1941 ~~~~ 1945 ( 546 Made by VOLKSWAGENS )
Construction: Type 82 Kubelwagen Steel central tubular frame with steel body. (Porsche took this from Hans Ledwinka s Tatra Vehicle.)
Engine: Horizontally opposed HO-4 cylinder air cool 985cc 23.5hp, as of March 1943 new 1131cc 25hp.rear mounted
Transmission: 4 Speed manual rear wheel drive with ZF LSD & plus hub reduction.
Suspension: 4 wheel independent suspension. Front two transverse swing arms, single shock absorbers. Rear trailing arm, single cam type hydraulic damper, torsion bar all around.
Max speed: 80 Km/h on land.
Weight: 790 kg ( 40 kg more than Type 60 because of rear hub reduction gear and over side 16 inch off road tire and 40L fuel tank )

History:

Hitler conceived the idea of the Volkswagen in 1934,after he got the power, he design to make a incredible 'modern' peoples auto mobile KdF (strength through joy) wagen for every body in his Country. the car cost no more than 1000 Reichsmarks ( about 85 sterling ) But no car maker like to build a such cheap but reliable and modern car, Nazi build a new Nazi industrial factory at Wolfsburg to build Kdf vehicle. The first model have been sold to Nazi party members, New KdF sedan speed not less than 100 km/h, 7 liters fuel can drive 100km.His party comrade Werlin believedpic1 that Dr.Ferdinand Porsche can design this small modern car, as Porsche had already enlisted to design a small racing car for their Country. Porsche made few prototypes between 1935-37,such as V1,V2,V3 and a 170H made by Mercedes, all use Porsche-designed, rear mount 4 cylinder engine, tubular chassis. Although the had beenpic1 unequivocally successful,1937 he build a W30 series and tested successfully by the VW Motor Pool ( 120 SS men under leadership of Hauptsturmfuhrer.) Base on the type W30, another new type 60 with three versions, one pieces steel hard top with rear split window Sedan, opening roof (rag top) sedan and convertible Sedan at 1937.At the same time, Porsche build few off road Vehicle Type 62 ( this was the prototype of VW82 cross country vehicle ).Unfortunately, the cross-country performance pic1was not good enough. Prof. Porsche subsequently increased the vehicles ground clearance by the special front stub axle and rear reduction gear for both wheel and a ZF self locking diff with modified gear ratio. this was the type 82 and entered mass production at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsbury in 1939. the new VW factory was laid on 26 May 1938 near town of Fallersleben The first 500 Type 60 will give the citizen at end of 1938 and many people paying 5 Reichs marks per week, However this was not a payment plan, but a layway plan, Stamps were purchased, and placed in a book. As the VW82 cross country Kubelwagen is very success in army at end of 1939,Porsche make another type 92/82e for test, They believe the KdF type 60 steel hard top body put on the VW82 Kubelwagen off road chassis will give the staff /command car more good protection. The only problem is 2 door, the people pic1at rear is not easy to leave the vehicle quickly. and the weight is 148 kg more than the open Kubel body because of its hard top KdF body. KdF - Wagen was a peoples cars project, from 1938 to 1940,54 sedans and six convertibles will built, from 1942-1944,another 650 sedans and 13 convertible were build, because of fuel and metal shortage. However, the peoples car never made it to the hands of the Germany people, most of them went to agencies of the party or state or to factory staff or display in German. Hitler also got one VW convertible, after the war, it passed to private hands, until 1956 it was bought back by the Volkswagen pic1Works. now it is in the auto museum in wolfsburg. On the other hand, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche to develop special versions of the KdF car were developed, namely an off road sedan based on the Kubelwagen ( type 82 ) and another four wheel drive model with the technology of the vw 128 schwimmwagen ( type 87 ) The KdF is a very modern all steel body at that time, without traditional wooden body put on the central tube frames, a 4 cylinder air cooled opposed 1L engine at rear with a 4 speed gear box,4 wheel independent suspension, a new 40 liters fuel tank and a 20L fuel can fitted in all KdF off road sedan. for 92 SS model, it have one more 20L fuel can put at front passengers foot space. All off road sedan have covered head lights for war service, and a camouflage light on the left fender. The both 82e and 87 have a very good off road performance, because the light weight, rear mount engine, weight on the top of rear axle, the best pic1off roader use at Desert. The fuel consumption is only 40% of the US jeep. The new 82e and 87 was given special front stubaxles and transmission, a reduction gears on both rear 2 wheel, this increase ground clearance at 80mm than type 60, a self locking differential to help off road performance, both rear wheel got same power. On type 87, a double low gear with 4 wheel drive fitted, and both 2 differential with ZF self locking system., an off road 16 inch wheel fitted on both 82e and 87, 5.25-16 off road tire,6.90-200 desert tire for tropics and 2.00-12 off road tire for VW87. In the summer of 1941, two VW 82e off pic1road sedans KdF have a long trip for test, it start from Berline to Afghanistan through Balkans to Black sea, Istanbul to Trabzon, Iran to Teheran then Afghanistan, after four weeks though the trip was not easy, many small problem, such as dust in engine, high ground temperature make the tire always over pressure at middle East. The 2 VW82e must have arrived in Kabul somewhat the worse for water. Their return trip to Germany was made impossible when Persia, friendly to Germany was occupied by British and Russian trops on August 25,1941.Both 2 off road sedan were apparently destroyed on the spot by their drivers. Most of KdF 82e and 87 off road Sedan were supplied to Rommel's Afrika-korps and special Waffen SS units (92SS model designated forpic1 SS Waffen unit with more equipment and a hand operated MP 38-40 gun ) as a 2-3 seat staff car or Commanders car, to give the Commanders and staff have more good protection from cold, sun, rain, wind and dust. also some use as a radio jeep. Most of VW87 got a big folding top. since 1941 until end of the war,546 unit of 82e been made and 562 unit of 87 been made, The VW KdF off road sedan was accorded only a subsidiary role in wartime action, too few of them had been made. On the other hand, The Kubel saw service almost every where, it was the German Jeep. The schwimmwagen primarily use by the reconnaissance units of the Panzer Grenadiers, especially the first units of the Waffen-SS, small attack units or scouting in the countryside. The lightness and great off road capability of the VW. KdF 60 sedan did not become widely available to the civilian public until the 1950s,As the shape like a Bug, people in US call it is a beetle. Today we can see one VW87 chassis with 6.90-200 sand tire at Porsche Museum at Gmund, Carinthia without body. One VW 82,VW 82e and one VW 87 at Volkswagen museum in wolfsburg ( this 87 was one of made at 1946,for test by the British Army, front tube bumper was from another British military vehicle.) two more VW 82 and VW82e at Auto Museum Sinsheim at Germany. only very few war time KdF off road Sedan survive today, Because pic1only handful VW82e and handful VW87 off road KdF been made at war time for Commanders ,staff and radio car, By the end of the war many off road KdF converted to run on woodgas or use bottle of gas, Because of fuel shortage. As it is a command car/staff car, near all of them destroyed by the British and US Soviet air attack in the North Africa, or Eastern front line, and some captured or destroyed by Red Army at Russia. Near the end of the War, almost all German Vehicle and weaponary destroyed by the Allired force. Some left by the roadside as the German troops retreated, many vehicle lack of gasoline, some KdF be the wrecks Kubel and VW166 spare parts, and some use by the opposite forces car. The civilianspic1 appropriated them too. Very few off road KdF survive after the war and near all body been shot-up. After the war, they use Type 60 body or use the KdF to make a short chassis, or a Van body or even a pick up body, use every day, until mid of 50s most of them go to junkyard at Europe. Most of the off road KdF was rebuild in original form the chassis put a body from about 1949 body. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche also use a KdF at war time in his Country. The one we have is a very nice 43 model 25hp 82e off road KdF sedan from Germany with a chassis No 5-xxxxx. it is very good condition, the body from a 49-50 KdF, the only problem is the axle, But we have another very original 82e chassis with all original axle, We will put the original axle to this historic vehicle at end of this year. This car got some history, it Was Built on June 9th 1943 Was Delivered June 18 1943 to Heereszeugamt (Translation: office of Army things) in Kassel Germany . we believe only the Per war KdF ( today every body call beetle ) still can use at today'spic1 traffic condition. 二戰時期曾經長天碧血,經戰火洗禮的 VW 82e KdF 、對於車迷來說,現在這個年代能見到這一輛尾期的 KdF 戰車放在歐美博物館已經是很幸運。現在這輛車能運作正常,所有都在中國香港,簡直可以說三生有幸。它就像時光機器,把我們帶回了那個戰火紛飛的年代,見證了這場人類有史以來最殘酷的不義戰爭。 這輛部車的歷史故事應從 20 世紀早期說起 1933 年 1 月 30 日,天生的政治家希特勒成為德國總理。這位出生於上上個世紀的車迷在他上台後的第 11 天便親自主持了柏林汽車展的開幕式,用他那出了名的口才許諾,要造一種 “ pic1大眾 ” 車,要讓每個德國家庭都擁有自己的汽車。這個承諾為希特勒原本就已經極高的支持率再加了一把柴;隨後推出的儲蓄計畫又保證了汽車工業初期建設資金提供了保障。 但是便宜又可靠又不耗油的汽車環保不是說有就有的。 生產設想中的廉價汽車必須以高銷量來保證廠家利潤,但當時德國還沒有發展出大規模生產的方法。 Mercedes Benz 、 BMW 、 Hanomag 、 Horch / Audi 、 Opel 也對國民車的設想並不感興趣。與此同時,當時已經嶄露頭角卻尚未名聲大噪的斐迪南保時捷一直在為設計廉價小車而努力,但苦於沒有人看好其項目。 1933 年秋,保時捷終於與希特勒見面,自然是一拍即合。方案很快被確定下來: 生產這一款最高時速不少於 100km/h 、能坐 4 個人、百公里油耗小於 7 公升、重量小於 950 公斤的國民車。 pic1 VW82e KdF :一開始就是經典 , 保時捷博士是天才設計師。所以在得到希特勒的支持之後,第一輛 “ 國民車 ” 很快誕生了。此車使用後置 1.0L 水平對置風冷發動機沒有油封的引擎,

後輪驅動,四輪獨立懸掛,被命名為 “Kraft durch Freude” ,簡稱 KdF ,意譯為 “ 充滿活力的歡愉 ” 。在希特勒的建議下,車的外形被改成了甲殼蟲的樣子。隨後的 1938 年大眾汽車公司成立, 1939 年大眾車 KdF 在柏林車展展出。汽車界都帶著嘲笑的情緒看這輛外形奇特的車,美國《時代》週刊記者更譏諷其為 “Beetle” ,不料這個外號的知名度迅速蓋過一直反響平平的 KdF—— 鼎鼎大名的甲殼蟲誕生pic1了! Type 60 公路橋車在戰時一共製造了 840 輛。

兩驅越野強者 : 最初量產的甲殼蟲是 Type 60 。德國民眾開始期待屬於自己的汽車。但 “ 國民車 ” 只是曇花一現。 1939 年 9 月 1 日,德國入侵波蘭;兩天後,英、法兩國政府在外交干涉無效的情況下,宣佈對德宣戰。第二次世界大戰全面爆發。 “ 國民車 ” 只生產了二百多輛就被命令停止,工廠轉而生產越野軍車和軍火。其實 Type 60 從來沒有落入人民手中,除了全國展出外,其他全由政府部門使用。 與 Type 60 同時,保時捷設計生產了少量編號為 Type 62 的甲殼蟲,這就是後來 Type 82 的原型車。 Type 62 可以說是 Type 60 的越野車版本,但其越野能力並不盡如人意。保時捷對 Type 62 進行越野方面的改造之後正式量產供應軍隊,也就是我們眼前的 VW82 kubelwagen 。

車主馬大立收藏的這輛 VW82e 出廠於 1943 年。仍然採用後置風冷水平對置四缸發動機,不過排量由原來的 985cc 變成了 1131cc ,動力也小漲了 1.5 匹而成pic1為 24.5ps 。雖然仍是後輪驅動但重心在尾驅動輸上,但越野能力不可小覷,特別是在沙漠的行駛能力甚至讓一些四驅車都自歎不如,但在沼澤地就會出現尾輪打滑現象。

首先 VW82e 輕,整備質量僅為 790kg ,即使車內坐上兩個人,全車也不到 0.9 噸。這讓 VW82e 在惡劣環境下比其他車輛擁有無可比擬的機動性。一般四驅車在沙漠中,前輪轉向已經會受到很大的阻力(這一點所有車都一樣),如果再在其上加有動力存在,便很容易刨出沙坑繼而陷下去。而 VW82e 自重小,前輪沒有動力,加上發動機後置使其負擔更小,裝上沙漠胎之後幾乎讓那些笨重的四驅越野車望塵莫及。 82e 在北非戰場十分出色,不但越野性能可靠良好耐用,更十分省油 20 公升油箱可走足 300 公里 ! 比起同時期汽車省出一倍以上。(今天汽車可能使用大約15年但是Kdf VW 82e 証明能使用超過40年 ,做少一點垃圾來世界,今天這可以說是另一個類型環保) 當時的 VW82e 主要是軍官用車。所以在配置上相對 “ 豪華 ” 。那個年代的人看不起開篷車,認為其科技含量低,因為馬車就是開篷的。因為面子,也因為不讓納粹軍官日曬雨淋,越野甲殼蟲都是有頂篷的設計。此車還是當時少有的全金屬車身結構而沒用木頭的(曾幾何時,受金屬冶煉和成型技術限制,木頭是車身結構中的重要組成部分)。另外,車內兩或三個座位是沙發,這在當時可是堪稱頂級配置。 在戰爭中,無論人還是車,都要準備隨時成為炮灰。對軍車的要求只有一個:行駛能力強pic1。製造方面則是能省就省。我們看到車身上的金屬都很薄,事實上,有些 VW82e 還是沒有車頂的。這樣節省出來的金屬又可以多造一些車或彈藥。另外,車身上的漆顏色看起來有點怪,有點像軍綠(灰),但又找不到哪國的軍隊是用這種綠(灰)。那是因為我們平時看到的漆都是經過一些工序調出來的,而 VW82e 所用的車漆,就是用原料製成之後的本色,沒有經過任何加工。這是最省錢、最省原料也是最省時間的辦法。

彌足珍貴的經典 : 德國戰敗後、戰時的軍車,很容易理解,作為軍官車,只要進入敵人的視野和射程之內,它肯定是首要攻擊物件。另一方面,納粹為世界人民帶來的災難實在太深重,所以即使有車倖存至戰爭結束,很多也被憤怒的民眾毀掉。所以能保存到現在的 VW82e 實在是少之又少今日被收藏家視為珍品,極為罕有。戰時 82e 只生產了 546 輛,不少先在酷熱的北非戰場及嚴寒史太林格勒供指揮官使用。戰後英軍很想用 VW82e 做為軍官車,可惜製造越野齒輪配件的公司在東柏林,在紅軍控制區內,所以用了廠內配件只做了少量 82e 。在戰時出產的 VW82e 車身是人手製造,而油箱也沒有兩個是一樣的。這也是為什麼 KdF 82e 只做了這麼少數量。中國汽車收藏家馬大立同時擁有 VW82與VW166。(如果你想轉用以上資料可以和我聯絡 Email : matailap@hotmail.com )
