History:

The Mercedes G (G stands for "Gelande-wagen"= off Road Vehicle) is the result of efforts to prepare a military" Euro Jeep ", in the mid of 70's, MB had joined with Steyr Daimler-Puch of Austria Range Rover at end of 79.The chassis with 460 and 461 No in front, part time 4WD with a Hi, Low, transfer case, 2 manually locking different tails & 4 wheel with coil spring suspension. Power by a small 2.3 gas, 2.4 Diesel, in fact this vehicle had already been designed for military use, but was loser in the 1977 competition against the VW ILTIS for a new Generation light cross country vehicle for the west German armed forces. However Franch Army like this car very much, soon it build by Peugeot as the P4 model. This vehicle won the French Army's contract to replace its War time Hotchkiss M201 jeep.

A Co called GFG (Gelandewagenfahrzeug Gesellschaft ) was established to build the vehicle jointly by Mercedes and Steyr , The Austrian Co that build the worlds best off road vehicle the Haflinger and Pinzgauer, At the end The Austrian bought out Mercedes in 1981 but continues to build the vehicle under contract for civil and military customers with Mercedes - Benz doing the marketing in all all countries other than Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Eastern bloc where it is sold under the Steyr-Daimler - Puch logo.

The G series mechanical components are made by Mercedes and many other parts come from passenger cars or light truck. A very strong Box steel ladder chassis like truck for G, got 2 size, The body work are made at Graz where final assembly at Styr at Austrian. This vehicle got a very small passenger cars motor, it is under power, until the 2.8 L 6 cylinder twin cam Gas or a 5 cylinder 3.0 5 cylinder turbo Diesel ENG. fitted in this vehicle. The long travel coil springs with 2 beam axles, give this car runs very well at rough condition, optional front and rear diff locks make this car can go any where.

On 1990 2nd Generation with a 463 chassic, pic1permanent 4X4, manually lockable 3 differentials, with a new steal body outside looks same, but 463 are more reliable. all parts not the same, & Luxurious Seats, Sun roof Teat & a 3.0 EFI 6 cylinder Gas, 3.0 6 cylinder Diesel, 3.5 Diesel Turbo. The price are expensive than 461 a few time, at same time 461 Got a 290 GD 2.9L 5 cylinder Diesel Engine. Both 461 & 463 still can buy at Europe today with a modern powerful 290TD, 270CDI, 400CDI, 320GE, 500GE Engine. Or even a AMG 55, The AMG model got a very hard suspension.

461 G model just like a Land Rover Defender for work use, and 463 same as Range Rover, it was the luxuries market. But G got more off road performance than any other 4x4 in the market because of 3 100% manual diff lock fitted. Most people can not see what diff between 461 G and 463G unless you got one.

The one we got was a very nice 1991 463 300GDL manual model, I remember at that time, this vehicle cost HK$1,280,000. When I am very young, I saw a captured new 230 GE LHD SWB ( Argentine Army ) by Gurkhas at army work shop at Tam Mi Camp Yeung Long. This vehicle was from Falkland War. I don't know why I saw this car at UK today.

Not many Mercedes 290GD, G300E,G300D,G500,G55 in HK, but many used G230E form Japan, some G280E from UK. The 460/461 are not power enough for today's motor way. The G230E with auto gear box is 100% under power, better drive a 2.5 Gas motor Ex-Government Defender.
