The Land Rover went into production in the 1948 as a stop gap measure, This extraordinary off road car has since become the main product of a separate Co, to build the 4 wheel drive after WWII, Not many people in Asia know Rover is one of the very old British car manufacturers in 1877, they build the bicycle & build motor cycle at 1903, & a 8 hp automobile. After WWII British without a small 4X4 off Road Vehicle, they copy the MB/GPW Jeep with a centre steering wheel and a small Rover 1.6L Engine. This was the Land Rover prototype. The Land Rover saw the light of day at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948,That year British motor industry was pushing desperately for exports and unveiling its first truly new postwar product in the attempt to get them.

The first production model was a brand new strong box girder chassis with a expensive aluminium body, a simple open pick up type with a canvas hood and a estate model were offered a few months after quantity production began at the Solihull factory in July 1948.80 inch wheel base, 4 wheel leaf suspension, power by a F-head 1595cc petrol 4 cylinder engine ( same as Rover P3 car's motor )part time 4wd system with Hi and Low range and PTO for agricultural and industry us as well. Willys CJ2A got PTO as well, but Land Rover got more PTO, such as front Capstan , it can use as winch or drive a belt, Engine Governor, Centre power take off, and rear power take off and rear capstan winch, most are very useful, It is very close to a agricultural tractor, some also good for Industry and military use. The rear PTO can join a power trailer to made the Land rover be a 6wd off road vehicle. This single axled power trailer build by Scottorn Trailer Ltd. it is for Series III or FC 101 at early 70s.More than 8 type PTO winch can fitted at front.

This Series I Land Rover began its military career with the British Army in 1949 and had test in the Korean War. The Land Rover Series I went on to become the British Army's standard quarter-ton 4x4 light vehicle, But at same time Austin got a Champ 4x4 small fiend car at market as well.

In 1952 the small 1.6 motor was replaced by a 2-L petrol engine and a new 107 inch long wheel base model push to the market, in 1954 80 inch wheel base was replaced by a new 86 inch wheel chassis.

In February 1958 the Series II was introduced in both 88 inch and 107 inch wheel base with a 2.25 petrol engine, or a 2.25 Diesel motor. This was the first diesel model for 4x4 in the Europe market, But it is a not reliable diesel, in Winter the engine is not easy to start. In 1958 a new Series II pick up was introduced on a 109 inch long wheel base. Army use 109 as well, but the chassis were more heavy duty, with high leg leaf spring bracket model FV18062.

One of the most famous military long range patrol vehicle/attack vehicles at end of 60s.The Special Air Service SAS bought 72 long range desert patrol vehicles built on Series II 109-inch military 1 ton 24V hihh leg chassis and transformed by Marshalls of Cambridge for The Regiment. The 2.25 -litre petrolengine was tweaked from the than standard 69bhp to 77b hp and compression was raised to 8,0:1. 9.00x15 over size sand tyres were mounted, doors, windscreen and canopy considered as unnecessary for desert driving. Fuel was carried in 3 tanks- a total of 40 gallons. Two 7.62mm machine gun mount, anti tank weapon, grenade holders, smoke charge, a lot of 20Lwater cans, 20L fuel cans Add to this extra weapons and kits and the weight goes from an empty 1810 kilos to an combat weight of 3000 kg- nearly half a ton more than the standard gross vehicle weight. Between 60-80s some 1 ton chassis 109
with over size 900R16 cross-country tire convert to Royal Army, Navy, Air force fire truck and light shorland Armoured versions some even with a MG turret like the Daimler ferret MK II FV701E turret. Because Armoured vehicle so heavy, some front axle also use heavy duty Salisbury type front axle. The long range patrol vehicle delivered in standard green but many were repainted in pink which was then believed to be the best camouflage paint in the desert. Notice the change in color as the angle of view changes. Not only British Army wide use this type long range patrol vehicle, Australia Army also use this type of vehicle since 60s until today. A JRA 6x6 Defender use as the Long range patrol today, USA Army also use some Defender 110 as long range patrol.

A military ambulance body convert to the 109 3/4 ton chassis at 60s for NATO army force, I got one at 1987 in HK. it was a 1973 109 Rover 9 cross country vehicle. front with anti roll bar.

The Series IIA introduced in September 1961. a minor modification with the 2.25L 4 cylinder engine. a large No of Land Rover 109 LWB 4x4 off road vehicle been export to every where in the world for commercial and military use, many commercial 12V STD 3/4 ton modified for military use. A hard top 3 door version 109 join the Military model, most for mobile office.1966 few LWB 24 V 109 towing a single axle power trailer for test, the rear trailer drive by 109s rear PTO unit, this was first rover 6x6. At the same time , Japanese powerful 4.0L 6 cylinder 4x4 at market too. At early 1967 a new 2.6L 6 cylinder engine was offered on a long wheel base model.

in 1966 Land Rover developed the 564 KG air - portable military vehicle prototype.

This was the first 24V SWB Land Rover with Water proof ignition elec. system.( Before only LWB Military model got 24V water proof ignition electric system and the chassis is a high leg model and more strong than the Civil model.) We got 3 at past 24 years. Today we still got one.

1970 Land Rover Developed a full time 4WD estates, coil suspension, disc brake all around, a new alloy v8 3.5 fitted, with a all new 3 door body, This vehicle is a comfort and purpose designed. This Range Rover was a new and expensive Luxury 4x4 at market at that time.

At 90s Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series and Mitsubishi Pajero were big success at 4wd Market, Land Rover Developed another 4x4 that price was between Defender and Range Rover, The New Car call Discovery, with many old Range Rover parts but put a new 7 seat body. Today you can see

Land Rover got one more small city SUV Free Lander.

Until end of 70s, over100 Country use Land Rover 88 & 109, not because the Land Rover was the best or very reliable, but they must use British car like HK. British got many colony at that time. the Gas & Diesel Engine is very small, & Diesel is not reliable,

Axle is not strong enough, At 1980 Series III got a optional 3.5 V8 gas motor, This motor and gear box same as 1970 Range Rover. A few V8 series III LWB convert to half-track and 6x6 model. Until 1983 New 110 use Range Rover coil spring suspension & full time 4X4 system. Until today the new Defender still use the 110 chassis, just with a new 5 speed or a 6 speed manual gear box and a 2.5 TDI or Ford 2.4TDI motor.

This car also got a 93 inch wheel base and a 130 inch wheel base model. The one we got is a 1980 made Series III 109 inch LWB hard top 1 ton hi leg chassis Land Rover. This type military 24V 109 1 ton chassis high leg model produce until 1985.

This off road vehicle service at British Army in HK since 1980, it is a very nice condition, and very low mile, 3 door with removable hard top with air condition, front tunner winch, Now this is one of our 4wd Co.'s collection. Old military Land Rover are often very low price,( HK$60000-80000 price Inc car duty in HK ) parts are not a problem, and after rebuild, you can Reg. in HK as a chassis car and drive them on the motor way, but all of them are pretty ragged when sold by the HK Royal Army before 1997. Now still got some 109, 88 and lightweight packed at Yuen Long open area. Most are very rust.
If you got a military 24V Land Rover, we have many parts to help you to keep the car running on the today's motor way. 24V parts is not a problem for us, just e mail us at fourwdco@yahoo.com or call us at HK office hour 2395 4142

A snorkel was STD. This British small 4x4 call Champ but the cost is too expensive, and the car is little heavy.
